Ang Jia Xin, a 16 year-old student, started her mini business of selling homemade slimes called Bobbaslime at the age of 14 and impressively, she currently has 31,300 followers on Instagram.
Being a young entrepreneur was never meant to be easy, but Jia Xin persevered. After watching Youtube tutorial videos on how to make slime, she decided to buy one from a local store. Dissatisfied with the texture, she made it on her own with reference from past Youtube Videos. That was when she embarked on her business journey.
Jia Xin started out by uploading videos of her slimes on Instagram and was surprised to realise that many were interested to buy them. She rented a locker in a consignment shop to put them up for sale. A variety of homemade slimes were put up, such as Pepe’s Kiwi Juice which has the scent of kiwis. As such, her slimes were unique and visually pleasing to customers.
However, Jia Xin was about to take the O-Level Examinations and was struggling to juggle between her business and school work. Due to the lack of time to post or even promote her slimes on Instagram, she felt pressured and stressed and her sales were not doing as well as before. Moreover, there were rivals like Whimsical Slimex and Petite Slimes for her to compete against. It was the satisfaction of being able to spend her hard-earned money that motivated her to press on.
Slime’s selling point is that it is a stress-relieving tool and is visually appealing. This business idea may not be viable in the long run as trends are constantly wavering and people may get bored of slimes after a while. However, if Jia Xin is able to put creativity into her slimes, her business can continue to stay relevant in the economy.
Ang Jia Xin is a rising star who takes pride in her business. She not only dreamt big, but also took actions to make those dreams happen. We hope that her story will inspire those who want to be entrepreneurs to have the courage to venture into the business world.
